Through the Snow to Tashigang – A Daring Bicycle Journey to India’s Highest Polling Station

Deep within the Himalayas, there are certain roads where reaching the destination feels less like travel and more like winning a battle.

Tashigang — the highest polling station in India. Standing at nearly 15,256 feet above sea level, this remote Himalayan village feels incredibly close to the sky itself. Reaching such a place on a bicycle was not just an adventure; it was a challenge against my own limits.

The Journey Begins: Snow, Mud, and Lonely Roads

Frozen snow lined both sides of the road, while a narrow trail of mud and melting ice stretched ahead.

The prayer flags tied to my handlebar fluttered in the icy wind, as if each one whispered:

“Keep going… just a little farther.”

The crunching sound of snow beneath the tires echoed through the silence.

At times, I had to push the bicycle through slush and ice. At other moments, I nearly slipped off the road. The higher I climbed, the heavier my breathing became. Oxygen was scarce, but the dream was much bigger than the struggle.

After every bend, it felt like the road would finally end.

But Himalayan roads never end easily.

The Bicycle and the Dream — Both Were Exhausted

Standing beside towering walls of snow, the bicycle looked like a silent witness to the entire journey.

Dust, mud, snow — it endured everything and kept moving forward.

That was the moment I realized something important:

In the mountains, survival is not about physical strength alone; it is about willpower.

The freezing wind struck my back, my fingers went numb, yet I never wanted to stop. Because ahead waited a destination unlike any other.

Finally — Tashigang!

And then, at last, I saw the words I had been dreaming about:

“Highest Polling Station of India – Tashigang”

That moment is difficult to describe in words.

It felt as though I had reached the edge of the world.

All around me were mountains and silence.

No city noise. No crowds.

Only the cold Himalayan wind and the sound of my own heartbeat.

Standing beside my bicycle, I felt this was not merely a destination —

it was an achievement.

The Mountains Teach You…

This journey taught me one thing:

The most beautiful views in life are never found at the end of easy roads.

Reaching Tashigang was not only about climbing to a great altitude; it was about overcoming fear, exhaustion, and personal limitations.

Many people may ask,

“Why go through so much pain?”

But those who truly love the mountains already know —

some roads are not meant simply to be reached; they are meant to be felt.

Final Thoughts

As I looked back one last time on my return journey, staring at the snow-covered mountains, it felt as though the Himalayas were whispering something:

The Himalayas do not accept people easily.

But if you carry enough courage, they reward you with memories that stay in your heart forever.

The tire marks of my bicycle on the lonely roads of Tashigang may disappear someday.

But the story of this journey never will.
